What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia has Greek roots that translate to “female breasts”. It is a term used to describe the development of excess breast tissue in male patients. A surprisingly common condition, gynecomastia can occur during the infant years, adolescence, or adulthood. Many men find it embarrassing but, thankfully, it is also highly treatable. Why Do I Have Excess Breast Tissue?

Gynecomastia has many causes. During infancy and teen years, it may be due to fluctuating hormone levels. In these cases, it will often resolve on its own. During adulthood, gynecomastia is often caused by:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Medications
  • Hormone disorders
  • Anabolic steroid use

What Are My Treatment Options for Gynecomastia?

Liposuction is the recommended treatment option for most men with gynecomastia. The enlarged breasts are generally made up of excess fat and breast tissue, both of which can be removed with ultrasonic liposuction. The procedure takes about an hour to complete, and most men are back to regular, non-strenuous activities in just a few days. You’ll need to wear a compression vest for about four weeks as you recover.

In cases in which men have developed gynecomastia due to anabolic steroid use, we may need to use surgical excision to remove stubborn breast tissue. An incision is made along the areola and the tissue is removed. We can also remove excess skin if needed.
