What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is used to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is most commonly performed around the mouth and eyes but is also effective on facial scars and areas of uneven pigmentation.
At The Plastic Surgery Center of Nashville, laser resurfacing is often performed along with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery. While a facelift or brow lift corrects laxity of the skin by re-draping tissue, the procedures will not improve texture.
The Skin Resurfacing Procedure
While many minimally invasive chemical and mechanical skin resurfacing techniques exist, the CO2 laser is the most potent, providing arguably the best results compared to other techniques. Laser skin resurfacing consists of a carefully controlled burn, which produces a smoother skin surface once healed.
After Laser Skin Treatment
Recuperation times are varied and often depend on the extent of treatment. Immediately after the procedure, our surgeons may have you apply a moisturizer and cleanse your skin gently several times a day. In some cases, they may apply a silicone mask that covers the laser-treated skin and slowly separates over several days as the skin heals underneath. The type of post-laser treatment we use will be selected specifically for you at the time of your consultation. Most patients will be able to resume wearing makeup after 10 to 14 days. It is not uncommon for pinkness or redness to persist for several months after laser skin resurfacing. While this can be covered with makeup, some people find this difficult to deal with.
The best results with the quickest recovery are obtained when patients adhere to a strict skin preparation program. Your personalized program and recovery period can be determined during your consultation.
