Fat transfer, also known as fat injection, is a natural way to increase volume to areas lacking fullness. At our Nashville surgery center, we perform fat grafting to the face and buttocks. The procedure involves removing fat from one part of the body and using it to increase volume in a different part of the body.
This volume added procedure usually removes excess fat from the abdomen, thighs, buttocks or back via liposuction, depending on the procedure. The harvested fat is then prepared for injection. Once the fat is injected, it develops a blood supply, making the results permanent. Since injections utilize your body fat, it is the most natural way to increase volume to the face and buttocks.
As we age, our faces gradually lose fat causing our faces to look sunken in. Fat grafting can reverse this sign of aging by adding volume back into the face for a more youthful appearance. Restoring a youthful appearance can be done by filling wrinkles in the face, adding volume to the cheeks, underneath the eyes, or increasing the fullness of the lips.
Often, fat injections are used in place of facial fillers. Since the fat is taken from your own body, the risk of allergic reactions that some may experience to dermal fillers is eliminated. Fat grafting is also more cost-effective than dermal fillers, making the fat injection procedure a more appealing option.
Fat transfer to the buttocks also referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift, utilizes your fat to create a more voluminous backside. It uses the same process as facial fat grating but is performed under general anesthesia. Usually, for the buttock, excess fat is collected from areas of the body such as the thighs, abdomen, and back. It is then purified and injected into the buttocks.
Buttocks fat injections are carefully placed to lift and contour the appearance of the buttocks. With the injection of your fat, the results are very natural. Often, patients may opt to receive buttock enhancement during a body lift.
Swelling is to be expected following both procedures and will decrease over time. Swelling can be expected to last for about one to two weeks. Swelling after fat transfer to the buttocks can last for about four to six weeks.
Recovery time will vary from patient to patient. Recovery time will depend on how much fat was injected and the areas that received liposuction. The procedures are highly individualized causing no recovery to be the same. Your recovery period will be discussed in detail during your consultation at our Nashville office.
As with all plastic surgery procedures, there are some risks to consider. The potential risks from fat injections will also vary from patient to patient depending on how well the body heals after the procedure. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will be sure to cover any potential risks you should know during your consultation.
